Honey, I'm Back!!!
March of the Penguins is GREAT! I love it! I love it! I LOVE it!
Went to Village in Knox City to watch "March of the Penguins" with Ivana. Must admit. I was a little skeptical at first. I've heard amazing reviews about the documentary-movie, especially the French-narrated version, but I was still a little 'hmmmmm' about watching a doco about penguins at a cinema. But it was the very few good movies to watch. So, we decided to watch it.
And boy! I didn't regret it one bit! It's amazing!!! Ivana and I were "aww"ing the whole movie cause the penguins are so cute! And these Emperor Penguins really are as amazing as people say they are. Every 5 years, the Emperor Penguins will make the long journey back to where they are born to find a mate and bring a new life into the world. Unless your heart is as ice cold as the icy weather in the South Pole, your heart will melt as you watch how they make the 70 miles journey to their birth place, almost all at once and immediately get about finding a mate...and it's so obvious when they do cause they become meshed together for good for the next 9 months of mating / birth season. The females will fight for the relatively fewer males and about 1-2 weeks into this age old ritual, the penguins settle into lovey dovey antics and mating...So cute to see penguins huddled together 2 by 2 all over. Then the egg finally comes and the female passes the egg to the male penguin so that it can travel back to the see, which is now even further because of the winter cold, to feed and bring food back for the new born. And for 2-3 months, the male penguins will weather ice cold winter storms and blizzards to protect the little eggs by shielding them in a pocket of skin and fat at the bottom of their body...
After bearing crazy weather for up to 125 days and not eating any food, the males penguins are so hungry that they will have no choice but to return to sea and leave behind the little baby penguins if the female penguins didn't return soon. And just when the male penguins look like they can't take it anymore, the female penguins appear and the greatest commotion begins as each male penguin calls out to his mate...and in that sea of sqwuaking and cawing...
"Honey, I'm back!!!"
"About time. What took you so long?!"
hahaha!...All the mates eventually find each other and exchange parenting duties...the mother feeds the little ones almost immediately. Then the father will communicate with the little penguins one last time to recognise their voice so that they will be able to recognise them when they come back...and the dads are off. Now, the winter season is not as harsh and the little penguins begin to grow stronger. But still...some of the little ones may die of the cold and some of the mother penguins become to overcome by anguish that they will try to steal a baby from one of the other mother penguins. But the whole group will not allow it and will defend the mother whose baby is being threatened by another female. It's interesting how these penguins have like a law between each other...
When the dads finish feeding, they return to look for their young. By now, the little ones are old enough to be left alone and some of the mother penguins even leave before the father comes back and heads back to sea for food. The parents will keep this up for the next few months as the little penguins grow stronger each day. At the end of 9 months, it's time for the mates to bade their final farewell to one another and this would be the end of their 'relationship'...And the little penguins are left on their own for the first time. And they would probably never see their parents again. When they are strong enough, they too return to sea...AWWWWWW!!!
About their quirky but heart warming courtship - "It's obvious that they are looking. But we don't know what they are looking for. But when they find it, you will know." They may only be penguins but it is so sweet to see the penguins going about trying to find the suitable partner for one another to mate with...And they are so tender and sweet to each other. The amazing thing is to see parenting split 50-50 between the parents. Because it is the females that lay the eggs, they get to go back to sea first while the males are the ones that actually nurture the eggs in the middle of the harshest time of winter till they hatch. Then the mums will return to see their little ones for the first time and take over from there. It's so cute when the female penguins would find their mate after sqwuaking and cooing for what seems like yonks and they would stare down at the little penguin between the father's feathers and layer of skin under him...
God, the world you have created is SO amazing! Everything you have created, even that vicious lion, is so so adorable and amazing! It's like your plan from the start was to create this beautiful and amazing world for us to live and enjoy dominion over...This world and all that is in it is so amazing that it takes my breath away sometimes. And sometimes, it takes little penguins to remind us what an amazing and loving God you are...If you would care for those penguins, you would care for us! hahaha! Love ya, Lord!

Sonnet #116
William Shakespeare
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O, no! it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.
